Sonnet-116

Text:-

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov'd,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov'd.

Explanation of the Poem

William Shakespeare's sonnet 116 was first published in 1609. This sonnet attempts to define love, by telling both what it is and is not. True love, believes and affirms the poet, is the union of true minds. Such union of true minds overcomes all obstacles. Love that changes when circumstances change is not love.The English sonnet has three quatrains, followed by a final rhyming couplet. It follows the typical rhyme scheme of the form abab cdcd efef gg and is composed in iambic pentameter, a type of poetic metre based on five pairs of metrically weak/strong syllabic positions.

Poet says that I cannot believe that there can be an obstacle between two people who truly love each other. Interruptions may come but if two people truly love, nothing can come between them. Love is not love, Love is not true if it changes when things get difficult.  If love changes in a difficult situation, it is not true love. What is mentioned above is not love but love is an ever fixed mark, but it is like pole star or some lighthouse that is permanent and never distracts. True love is like a star that shows the way to the sailors wandering in the sea. It's worth is so great that it cannot be measured, it cannot be known.
Whereas the sailors with its help(pole star) find the direction.
Love doesn't change with time, it is not bounded with time while the beauty and youth are, both of them get worse over time bht not love. Love is unaffected and does not diminish with time.
Love lives together until death and if I am wrong. If this is wrong and if someone proves this or it proves on me, I will assume that neither I ever wrote poems nor any person ever loved
.

Translation of the Sonnet :-

Text :-

Modern Text :-

I hope I may never acknowledge any reason why minds that truly love each other shouldn’t be joined together. Love isn’t really love if it changes when it sees the beloved change or if it disappears when the beloved leaves. Oh no, love is a constant and unchanging light that shines on storms without being shaken; it is the star that guides every wandering boat. And like a star, its value is beyond measure, though its height can be measured. Love is not under time’s power, though time has the power to destroy rosy lips and cheeks. Love does not alter with the passage of brief hours and weeks, but lasts until Doomsday. If I’m wrong about this and can be proven wrong, I never wrote, and no man ever loved.
