That thereby beauty’s rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease
His tender heir might bear his memory.
But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed’st thy light’s flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
Thou that art now the world’s fresh ornament
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content,
And, tender churl, mak’st waste in niggarding.
Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world’s due, by the grave and thee.
Summary
In this sonnet Shakespeare is trying to convince a young man to have children.
We want the most beautiful people to have children, so their beauty will be preserved forever—when the parent dies, the child he leaves behind will remind us of his beauty. But you, in love with your own pretty eyes, are letting your beauty burn itself out.
Just as candle burns itself to light up the room the young man is also burning the fuel of his youth that means wasting his beauty.
You’re starving the world of your beauty rather than spreading the wealth around.
Means, now there is abundance but you will bring famine. You’re acting like your own worst enemy! Because the young man is not interested in heir. Right now you’re the best-looking thing in the world, the only person as beautiful as spring time. Just as the spring is the symbol of new life and beauty, young man can also bring a new life into this world.
But your beauty is like a new bud, and you’re letting it die before it can develop and bring you true happiness.
Because with passing time young man will become old and his beauty will also vanish.
You’re a young man, but you act like an old miser—you’re wasting your beauty by hoarding it and keeping it to yourself! Take pity on the rest of us, or this is how you’ll be remembered: as the greedy pig who hogged his own beauty and took it with him to the grave. Gluttony is one of the seven sins in christianity and if the young man dies without having a child and spreading his beauty for future generations, he is a glutton.

इस sonnet में shakespeare एक young man से यह कहते दिखाई देते हैं कि सुंदर लोगों को बच्चे पैदा करने चाहिए ताकि आगे भी आने वाली future generations उनके बच्चों की सुंदरता की तारीफ कर सके। वे बच्चे उस young man की यादों को संजो कर रखेंगें। लेकिन young man या जवान आदमी खुद की सुंदरता में ही खोया है, मग्न है और अपनी ही सुन्दर आँखों से इकरार में लगा है।
वो लालची बनकर अपनी सुंदरता को खुद ही consume कर रहा है। तो जैसे मोमबत्ती खुद को जलाकर प्रकाश फैलाती है, और फिर खत्म हो जाती है, ऐसा ही कुछ वो जवान आदमी भी कर रहा है पर ये Gluttony यानि पेटूपन को दिखाता है जो ईसाई धर्म में पाप माना जाता है।
सुन्दर जवान आदमी आज जहाँ प्रचुरता है वहाँ अकाल वाली स्थिति ला रहा है, क्योंकि एक समय के बाद वो बूढ़ा हो जाएगा तो सारी सुंदरता खत्म हो चुकी होगी यानि अकाल।
Young man खुद का ही दुश्मन है, खुद के साथ ही बहुत क्रूर है, क्यों ? क्योंकि वो बच्चे नही पैदा कर रहा जो उसकी यादों को preserve करें।
Poet young man से कहते है कि तुम अभी इस दुनिया की ताजा शीतल सजावट हो, यानि तुम इस धरती पर एक सुन्दर चीज हो। बसंत के आगमन के संदेशवाहक हो, यानि तुम भी spring के जितने ही सुंदर हो।
तुम अपनी इस self-satisfied beauty को खुद में ही दबा रहे हो/ दफना रहे हो। यानि समय के साथ तुम्हारी सुंदरता खत्म हो जाएगी, और जो ये सुंदरता की कली है, तुम्हारी संतुष्टि के कारण खिल नही पाएगी, तुम्हारे साथ ही मुरझा जाएगी।
तुम एक बहुत कंजूस आदमी हो जो self-love में अपनी सुंदरता waste कर रहा है। इस दुनिया पर दया करो, बच्चे पैदा करो नही तो तुम एक glutten हो, पेटू हो, जो अपनी सुंदरता सिर्फ अपने तक रख रहा है, और इसे कब्र में अपने साथ ही ले जा रहा है। यानि अगर तुम बिना बच्चे पैदा किये ही मर जाते हो, तो तुमने इस दुनिया को उपयुक्त रूप से खाया है, नष्ट किया है।
